Cora's Quilt I

So, my fiance's brother's wife (a.k.a. my future sister-in-law) just had a baby about two weeks ago. For her first Christmas, I'm making her a quilt! (Yes, I know - Christmas has already passed! As a family, we're exchanging gifts on New Year's Day instead, so I have 3 days left to put this thing together!)

It's a simple nine-patch quilt made of bold, bright mottled cotton squares, and a fun animal-print on the reverse.

Here's the progress from the past two days:



Fabric cut into strips





Stitched into triple strips

Strips cut into 2.5" sections, and pieced into a square



Tonight: finishing the cutting of the triple strips, and piecing as many of them together into squares as I can. Looks like it's about time to totter off to the coffee pot... :)

How did you cut the fabric so straight? (I'm interested in learning to quilt, so this is lucky that you're posting progress on quilting!).

ALSO is your grid board just good background or did you use it to measure?

The grid board and my huge ruler is how I get everything so straight! It's a self-healing mat. In some of the photos you can see mu huge ruler... I essentially square off one edge of the fabric, and use that to square up the other three sides of it when it's still a large piece.

Then, I use the large ruler to measure and cut the pieces that I need with a rotary cutter. I'll do a post for you to show you my process (I'm a visual person, so I figure it might help, 'cause if I had to follow my own directions I'd probably get lost, lol)

The rotary cutter sounds like it's key! I just got excited thinking about the possibilities :)

It is indeed. It lets you cut and measure at the same time, and it makes sure your lines are perfectly straight, instead of marking up the fabric and cutting it up with shears.
